Manufacturing has gone digital. Production equipment, sensors, and enterprise systems generate data that drives efficiency, but only if the underlying IT infrastructure is reliable and secure. The shop floor isn't an office. The network has to handle dust, vibration, temperature swings. The security model is different. OT (operational technology) and IT converge, but they're not the same. And downtime has a different cost. When the line stops, you're losing money by the minute. This guide covers what manufacturing IT needs to get right.

Shop Floor Connectivity

Industrial networks must withstand harsh environments while supporting real-time communication. Proper cabling, industrial switches, and segmentation protect production systems from office network issues. Office-grade gear doesn't always survive the shop floor. Industrial Ethernet switches, hardened cable, proper enclosures. Plan for the environment. Vibration can kill consumer equipment. Dust gets into everything. Temperature swings affect reliability. Use the right hardware for the right place.

Segmentation is critical. Your production network shouldn't be on the same VLAN as your office printers. A compromise in the office shouldn't spread to the line. Isolate OT. Control what talks to what. The network topology should reflect the risk. Production systems are critical. Treat them that way.

IoT and Data Collection

Sensors and connected equipment provide visibility into production. The right network and data infrastructure capture this information for analytics, predictive maintenance, and process optimization. Machine data is valuable. OEE, cycle times, temperature, vibration. It flows from the shop floor to analytics platforms. The network has to carry it. With enough bandwidth. With enough reliability. And securely. IoT devices are often the soft underbelly of industrial networks. Default passwords. Outdated firmware. No segmentation. Plan for IoT from the start. Segment it. Monitor it. Patch it when you can. The data is worth protecting.

Data architecture matters too. Where does the data land? How is it stored? Who can access it? Manufacturing generates a lot of data. Not all of it needs to go to the cloud. Edge processing can reduce bandwidth and latency. But you need a strategy. Collect what matters. Store it appropriately. Use it for decisions. The technology enables it. The strategy defines it.

Security for OT

Operational technology (OT) networks have different security requirements than traditional IT. Segmentation, monitoring, and access control protect production systems from cyber threats without disrupting operations. You can't always patch OT systems on the same schedule as office PCs. Some equipment runs legacy software. Some vendor contracts restrict changes. So you segment. You monitor. You control access. You build defense in depth so that a single compromise doesn't take down the line. OT security is a discipline. It requires understanding both IT security and industrial operations. Work with partners who get both. The stakes are too high to wing it.
